Malting news World: Developing lack of malt supplies risk for brewers globally

China exported 490,000 tonnes of malt in 2019. Since the closure of barley imports from Australia, the Chinese malt industry is hopelessly uncompetitive in world markets, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in August.

In the same year, the U.S. malt exports totalled 400,000 tonnes, almost all of it to Mexico. The analysts are asking themselves whether it can do the same in 2021/22.

Canada exported 590,000 tonnes of malt in 2019, of which 317,000 tonnes to the U.S., mostly intra-company business. 270,000 tonnes were sold to other destinations. With badly damaged and reduced barley crops, it is very uncertain whether North America can still export malt this season.

It looks like a challenging campaign for the capable exporters - Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, the EU and the UK, and also Russia and Ukraine. A risk for brewers in malt producing and malt importing countries is a developing lack of supplies, either in single markets or even worldwide.
